Trump Sends $500 Refund Checks to Nearly a Million Americans
Mailboxes across the country are about to get a little more welcome this week. Nearly one million Americans are receiving $500 refund checks from the Trump administration after being overcharged on their health insurance — and some families could see more than one.
Who Is Getting the Checks
The refunds go to Americans who paid user fees on the federal health insurance exchange and were overcharged under the previous administration. The Treasury Department began sending the checks out, with letters hitting mailboxes this week.
Most recipients earn around 400% of the federal poverty line — about $64,000 for a single person or $132,000 for a family of four, according to the White House. Americans between 100% and 400% of the poverty line are also included. Families with more than one individual who paid the fees to the federal government could be in line for multiple $500 checks.
The Letter From Trump
Each check arrives with a personal letter from the president explaining the refund. “You have paid into this flawed System, and now you are finally getting something back,” Trump wrote in the letter now landing in mailboxes.
The president first announced the refund program on September 10, framing it as a correction for families who were charged too much by the system they were forced into.
Why the Refunds Are Happening Now
The checks come in the wake of the expiration of the enhanced Affordable Care Act subsidies at the end of 2025 — which Trump and Republicans in Congress declined to extend. That expiration made insurance more expensive for millions of consumers, and the administration has positioned the $500 refunds as a direct offset for the Americans who were overcharged.
The refund program is separate from another headline-grabbing promise from the president: a $5,000 dividend he has vowed to distribute to all Americans if Republicans retain control of Congress in the midterms. Democrats have attacked that proposal as a vote-buying scheme, and even some Trump allies have expressed skepticism.
The $500 checks, by contrast, are already in the mail.
What to Do If You Qualify
There is no application process for the refund checks — the Treasury is sending them automatically to Americans it identified as overcharged. If you paid user fees through the federal health insurance marketplace, watch your mailbox in the coming days and check with your family members: if two or more people in your household paid fees, more than one check may be on the way.
