Joy Behar Back on The View as Show Denies Firing Claim

Joy Behar is back at the Hot Topics table. The 84-year-old comedian returned to The View on Tuesday, October 27, after almost a month off the air — and the show used her return to knock down a rumour that had been gathering steam in her absence.

Reports in recent days had claimed that producers were considering letting Behar go as part of a panel shake-up. The View says that is not true, and Behar’s return, announced in advance by the show’s own producer, tells a very different story from the one in the rumour mill.

The Rumour

The speculation began while Behar was recovering from a shoulder injury. Anonymous insiders quoted in tabloid reports claimed that executives were worried about her health, saw her as a liability backstage, and wanted to reshape the panel to make the show less combative and more appealing to a broader, younger audience.

One unnamed source was quoted as saying staff had been acting like guide dogs for Behar backstage, always making sure she got where she needed to be. Another strand of the reporting suggested bosses wanted her to retire gracefully rather than risk another fall.

None of those claims came with a named source, and none was confirmed by ABC or by the show. They circulated while Behar was off screen and unable to answer them herself.

The Injury That Started It

Behar, an original co-host who has been on The View since it launched in 1997, dislocated her shoulder in late September after catching a heel backstage. She has not appeared on the show since September 30.

Co-host Sunny Hostin told viewers on October 1 that Behar was recovering and expected to return. Behar missed her own birthday episode on October 7, when moderator Whoopi Goldberg read out a message from her joking that recovering at her age took a lot longer than it did at 21, and promising she would be back to share the full story.

Goldberg and the other co-hosts said repeatedly on air that they missed Behar, with Goldberg telling her last week that it was not the same at the table without her.

The Show’s Response

Entertainment Weekly reported that a representative for The View said there was no truth to the claim that Behar was under consideration to leave amid a panel shake-up.

Executive producer Brian Teta gave the return a date before it happened, announcing on the show’s Behind the Table podcast on Monday, October 26, that Behar would be back the next day for the first time in almost a month. Staff and fellow panelists, according to the same report, were looking forward to having her back.

That timeline matters: a show planning to push out a co-host does not usually announce her return on its own podcast the day before she walks back in.

Her Return

Behar returned on October 27 to applause, with production playing a pointed intro song as she took her seat. She joked about the song choice, then described her injury in characteristically blunt terms, saying a dislocated shoulder was worse than childbirth and joking about what she would have confessed under that kind of pain.

Goldberg had already made clear on air how much Behar’s absence was felt, and the warm on-air welcome matched that. Behar also recently marked a milestone as the longest-running female host of an American television program, a record that underlines just how long she has been at the centre of daytime television.

What the Rumour Got Wrong

The gap between the rumour and the reality is the story here. The claim was that Behar was being pushed out; the confirmed facts are that she was injured, she recovered, the show denied the firing claim, and she returned on a date its own producer announced in advance.

That does not mean there is never backstage debate about a long-running show’s future, but on this specific claim — that producers were planning to fire Behar — the show’s denial and her return are the strongest evidence available, and they point the other way.

For now, the Hot Topics table is whole again, and Behar, who has outlasted almost every daytime shake-up since 1997, is back where she started.
