DIY Mini Witch Broom Pencil Toppers
Every pencil deserves a little Halloween magic, and these mini witch brooms are the cutest way to give it one. Made from cinnamon sticks and twine in about five minutes each, they smell wonderful too — perfect for party favors, classroom treats, or a spooky desk.
What You’ll Need
- Cinnamon sticks, one per broom (about 10 cm long)
- Natural jute twine or thin craft twine
- Unsharpened pencils, one per broom
- Strong craft glue or a low-temperature glue gun
- Sharp scissors
- Optional: tiny ribbon, mini charms, or a black felt hat cutout for decorating
Bundle the Twine Bristles
Cut about twelve lengths of twine, each roughly 12 cm long, and lay them in a neat bundle. Hold the bundle flat on the table and line up one end so the bristles look even. Take a short piece of twine and tie it tightly around the bundle about 2 cm from the top. This tied section will become the neck of the broom, so pull the knot snug and trim the loose ends.
Trim and Shape the Broom
Fan the twine out below the tie so it spreads like real broom bristles, then trim the bottom edge into a gentle, slightly uneven curve. Longer strands in the middle and shorter ones at the edges give the most natural shape.
Attach the Broom to the Pencil
Place the flat, tied top of the twine bundle against the end of a cinnamon stick, with the bristles pointing down past the stick. Wrap twine firmly around the bundle and the stick together, two or three times, and tie it off at the back. Add a dot of craft glue under the wrap for extra hold. Then glue the cinnamon stick handle to the top of a pencil, or slide it over the pencil end if the stick is hollow enough, and let it dry flat for a few minutes.
Make a Set and Style Them
Repeat the steps to make three or four brooms, varying the twine colour or adding a tiny ribbon bow at each neck. Stand the finished pencils upright in a small jar or mini cauldron for a ready-made Halloween display, or tie them in a bundle with ribbon as party favors.
Styling Tips
For a classic witchy look, use natural jute twine and plain cinnamon sticks. For a playful party table, mix in orange or purple twine and add a tiny star charm to each neck. Keep brooms small and light so pencils still balance in a cup.
Safety note: Adults should handle the scissors and any glue gun, and cinnamon sticks can be brittle, so check for sharp splinters before handing the finished brooms to young children. These toppers are for decoration and light everyday use, not for chewing.
This tiny craft costs just pennies per broom, takes only minutes, and turns ordinary pencils into the most charming little brooms on the Halloween table.
