DIY Mini Potion Bottle Set for Halloween
Every witch’s shelf needs a few mysterious little bottles, and this mini potion set is the easiest way to get that look. With small glass bottles, tinted water, a pinch of glitter and hand-torn paper labels, you can build a whole apothecary display in under half an hour. No sewing, no power tools, and no mess that takes longer to clean than the craft itself.
What You’ll Need
- 3-5 small glass bottles with corks (different shapes and heights work best)
- Water and food colouring in green, purple, orange and black
- Fine glitter in gold, green or purple
- Tiny charms such as mini bats, skulls or stars
- Aged-looking paper or plain kraft paper, torn by hand
- A fine pen, twine, and scissors
- A small funnel and a tray to catch drips
Fill and Tint the Bottles
Start by filling each bottle about three-quarters full with water, using the funnel to avoid spills. Add just two or three drops of food colouring and swirl gently until the colour looks rich but still clear enough to see through. A deep green reads as Witch’s Brew, purple as a midnight tonic, and orange as pumpkin elixir. Work over a tray so a stray drip never reaches the table.
Add Glitter and Charms
Sprinkle a small pinch of glitter into each bottle and give it a slow swirl. Less is more here: a little glitter catches the light beautifully, while too much turns the liquid cloudy. Drop in one tiny charm per bottle, such as a bat or a star, and let it settle. Press the cork firmly into the neck so nothing leaks when the bottle is moved.
Make the Aged Labels
Tear small rectangles from kraft paper instead of cutting them neatly. The rough, torn edges are what make the labels look old and handmade. Write a potion name on each one with a fine pen: Bat Wings, Witch’s Brew, Pumpkin Elixir, Moonlight Tonic. Wrap a short length of twine around the bottle neck, tuck the label under it, and tie a small knot at the front.
Cork and Group the Set
Once every bottle is labelled, stand the set together on a shelf, tray or windowsill. Mix tall and short bottles so the group looks collected rather than matched. Tuck a few dried leaves, a mini pumpkin or a string of fairy lights around the base to finish the display. Step back and swap any two bottles until the colours balance.
Styling Tips
For a darker, moodier shelf, use deep green and purple bottles against a black tray. For a brighter Halloween table, add orange bottles and gold glitter. The set also works beautifully as party table decor, with one bottle at each place setting. Store the bottles upright and out of direct sunlight so the colours stay vivid.
Safety note: These bottles are decoration only. The tinted water and glitter are not for drinking, so keep the set away from small children and pets, and display it where it will not be knocked over.
This little set costs just a few dollars, takes about 25 minutes, and turns an ordinary shelf into a tiny Halloween apothecary that guests will ask about all season.
