Klitschko Petitions to Protect Daughter’s Inheritance

Less than two months after Hayden Panettiere’s death, a legal fight is brewing over her estate — and her ex-fiance is asking a court to step in fast. Former heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko has filed an urgent petition in Los Angeles County court seeking temporary authority over the inheritance of the couple’s 11-year-old daughter, Kaya, who is Panettiere’s sole heir.

What the Petition Asks

According to the filing, Klitschko wants the court to let him act as his daughter’s temporary representative in California so he can safeguard her assets until a permanent estate administrator is appointed. The petition describes the request as “urgent and essential,” warning: “Without an immediate appointment for these purposes, there is a high probability that property belonging to Hayden’s Estate may be lost, damaged or dissipated before a duly appointed personal representative can be in place to protect it.”

The filing was submitted on a Thursday and became public the following Monday after TMZ first reported it. A hearing is scheduled for October 8.

Why He Says It’s Urgent

The petition paints a troubling picture. It cites items seized by federal agents as part of the investigation into Panettiere’s death, noting there is currently no authorized person to deal with investigators and make sure the property is returned. It also claims unnamed and unauthorized people have accessed her Los Angeles residence, and that valuables are missing.

According to the filing, Panettiere and Klitschko had already hired security to protect her home before her death after an unnamed person gained unauthorized access — and the petition says that person is expected to keep trying to “misappropriate” property belonging to the estate.

Who’s Who in the Case

Klitschko, 50, is a Ukrainian Olympic gold medalist who held multiple heavyweight titles between 2000 and 2015. He has had full custody of Kaya for most of her life, and she lives with him in Ukraine. He and Panettiere began dating in 2009 and were engaged in 2013. His older brother Vitali, also a former champion boxer, is the mayor of Kyiv.

Panettiere, the former star of “Heroes” and “Nashville,” died on August 16 at age 36. A coroner’s report found she died of an accidental overdose of several drugs, including fentanyl, after being found unresponsive in an apartment in Greenville, South Carolina. Her father later told investigators she had planned to visit her daughter in Ukraine just days after her death.

What Happens Next

For now, the October 8 hearing will decide whether Klitschko gets the temporary authority he is seeking. His lawyers stress the move is only about protecting his daughter’s future — not about taking permanent control of the estate. As the court process unfolds, the case is a stark reminder that even in grief, the legal battles over what a loved one leaves behind can begin almost immediately.
