Judi Dench Says Vision Loss Has Ended Her Acting Career
Dame Judi Dench has given the most definitive update yet on her health — and it marks the end of one of the greatest acting careers of all time. Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme on October 22, the 91-year-old Oscar winner said her deteriorating eyesight has left her unable to act on stage or in films.
“I can’t be on stage. I can’t do a play any more. I can’t do a film any more. I can’t read any more,” Dench told host Emma Barnett. “So you’ve got to adjust to all that, and make allowances for it. And just get on and don’t think about it too much.”
A Diagnosis From 2012
Dench was diagnosed with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) back in 2012. The condition damages the macula — the part of the retina responsible for sharp, central vision — making reading, recognizing faces, and seeing fine detail increasingly difficult. There is currently no cure.
She has spoken openly about the disease for years. In 2023 she revealed she had to give up driving, and she has described navigating film sets with helpers warning her about cables and furniture. During the BBC interview, she admitted she could not even make out Barnett’s face sitting across from her.
Not Quite a Formal Goodbye
Notably, Dench never used the word “retired.” Her words were about what she physically can no longer do — not a decision to step away. In her new memoir, Is It Too Late to Make a Run for It? (out November 3), she writes that she worries if she stops acting, she will “never start again.”
For years she managed by having friends teach her scripts, relying on what she calls a photographic memory. But as her vision has worsened, even that workaround has reached its limit.
A Seven-Decade Legacy
Dench’s career spans seven decades — from Shakespearean stages to an Academy Award for Shakespeare in Love (1998) and eight films as M in the James Bond franchise, starting with GoldenEye in 1995. Her last major film role was in 2022’s Allelujah.
She remains characteristically pragmatic. Aging, she said, is “rubbish” — but the eyesight is “a whole other ball game.” True to form, she is not dwelling on it: she has just published a memoir and keeps making public appearances.
