7 More Facts That Sound Fake But Are Real
You loved the first batch of unbelievable-but-true facts. Here are seven more — each one verified, each one guaranteed to win you a trivia night.
1. Sea Otters Hold Hands While They Sleep
Sea otters sleep floating on their backs, and to keep from drifting apart, they hold paws. Groups of resting otters are called “rafts” — and yes, mother otters even wrap their pups in kelp like a seatbelt. It is exactly as adorable as it sounds.
2. Sharks Are Older Than Trees
Sharks have been swimming the oceans for about 450 million years. Trees showed up roughly 350 million years ago. That means sharks predate trees by around 100 million years — they even predate the rings of Saturn.
3. Cleopatra Lived Closer to the iPhone Than to the Pyramids
Cleopatra lived around 30 BC. The Great Pyramid of Giza was built around 2560 BC — about 2,500 years before her. The iPhone launched in 2007, only about 2,000 years after her. She is closer in time to us than to the pyramids’ construction.
4. Hot Water Can Freeze Faster Than Cold
This is the Mpemba effect, named after a Tanzanian student who noticed it in 1963. Under certain conditions, hot water freezes before cold water — scientists think evaporation, convection currents, and dissolved gases all play a role. It is real, documented, and still not fully explained.
5. The Eiffel Tower Grows Taller in Summer
Metal expands when heated, and the Eiffel Tower is made of iron. On a hot summer day the tower can grow about 15 centimeters (6 inches) taller than in winter. Gustave Eiffel’s engineers accounted for thermal expansion in the original 1889 design.
6. Saturn Would Float in Water
Saturn’s average density is about 0.69 grams per cubic centimeter — less than water’s 1.0. If you could find a bathtub big enough, Saturn would float. (You would need a bathtub roughly 120,000 kilometers wide.)
7. Jellyfish Are 95% Water
A jellyfish has no brain, no heart, and no bones — and it is about 95% water. That is why they look almost invisible drifting through the ocean, and why a beached jellyfish seems to vanish into nothing.
